Why We Should Ignore Statistics and Opinions in the Creative Process
Staying motivated to create from within
I always go through a strange cycle with the creative process. I get very excited about sharing something I’ve been working on, but then soon after I share it I’m easily distracted by whether anyone has engaged with it.
Social media (Medium included) makes it far too easy to track statistics regarding engagement. Spotify, Apple and Amazon even give this option for artists.
While it’s really interesting to see that you have a handful of listeners in such-and-such a country, statistics can really be a distraction from the creative process.
That’s why I really resonate with quotes like this:
That sort of confirmation is not good for an artist, the only drive should be his work. The pats on the shoulder should not be the motivation. If you only work based on those compliments or on the boost you get, you will crash and burn at one point.
Let them talk… don’t forget that opinions are easy. They are not in your shoes. Be an artist…
