The Subtle Art of Failing Forward

Letting my goals be refined through failure

Last week I graduated from a twelve-week Web Development Intensive program. It was very intensive. And now that the intensity is over, I feel a more acute awareness of what’s next. That is, the need to find a job.

To compound this awareness, there were a few things, recently, that sucked the wind out of my sails. Nothing dramatic. Just life, happening, which threw me off center. I did not reel it in quickly enough, and it soon spiraled out of control in my mind.

When this happens, it can quickly feel paralyzing.

I even found myself questioning: Did I make the right decision to do this? Would the security of what I left behind be better than this?

This morning I read a quote from Bill Plotkin, which was helpful. He says,

Discovering your unique gift to bring to your community is your greatest opportunity and challenge. The offering of that gift — your true self — is the most you can do to love and serve the world. And it is all the world needs.
